By Huseyn Veliyev - Trend:

The Information Technologies Institute (ITI) of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) is developing proposals on regulation of e-waste of Azerbaijan's state oil company SOCAR, the ITI told Trend.

The company said relevant work is carried out within the framework of a grant program of SOCAR.

"Presently, SOCAR has a technical base for disposal of certain categories of e-waste. For example, car batteries and energy-saving lamps. Our experts study the e-waste processing in detail, and relevant proposals for their management, taking into account international experience, will be submitted to SOCAR in accordance with the results of the work. We believe that we will be able to submit these proposals by mid-July," the company said.

Starting July 1, 2018, the Institute will simultaneously work to develop common proposals for the recycling and management of e-waste throughout the country within a grant program of the Science Development Fund under the President of Azerbaijan.

E-wastes are considered dangerous, as certain components of some electronic products contain materials that are harmful, depending on their condition and density. High-tech waste (semiconductors, resistors, fuses, power supplies, connecting cables, etc.) contain cadmium, mercury, chromium, bromine, nickel, lithium and other elements that decompose and release hazardous carcinogens.

Previously, the ITI noted that the problem of e-waste in Azerbaijan is becoming more threatening, and a legal basis is needed to regulate the issue.
