By Huseyn Veliyev - Trend:

The Teleradio Production Association in Azerbaijan has curtailed plans to deploy a commercial digital TV package in the country's Sheki region, a source in the country's telecommunications market told Trend Aug. 16.

The digital commercial package was deployed in a test mode in the area for several months.

"We did not observe demand among the population, so we had to roll back the project. The fact is that the vast majority of the population of Sheki and other surrounding areas are more inclined to use satellite TV. The rest access content via cable TV and the internet. Nevertheless, we are now considering other options for expanding the commercial package in the region. It is also possible that it will be deployed in other parts of the country," the source said.

Presently, a commercial package of digital TV is available in Ganja, Lankaran and Guba districts, as well as nearby settlements. The commercial package is being promoted in Baku, under the "ATV plus" brand.

The commercial package includes about 100 TV channels. The monthly subscription fee for the commercial package in the regions of Azerbaijan is six manats, in Baku - 10 manats.

To view the commercial package, a digital TV receiver (set-top box) or a CAM-module must be purchased. The devices cost 86 manat and 66 manats respectively.

($1 = 1.7 manats, on Aug. 17)
