Tehran, Iran, Oct.17.

Trend:

An Iranian general commented on possibility of Internet outage as a part of US efforts against Iran on November 4.

The US is trying to cut off all oil imports from Iran following President Donald Trump's decision in May to pull out of the 2015 multilateral deal that eased global sanctions in exchange for curbs on Iran's nuclear program and malign activities.

It has given a November 4 deadline to its allies to bring down their import of Iranian oil to zero.

“If this happens (and internet goes down), there are measures to maintain the essential functions of the country and the national information network. We are prepared to handle the basic services,” Brigadier General Gholam Reza Jalali, head of Iran’s Civil Defense Organization said, Fars news agency reported.

“In cyberspace, the power is not symmetrical and there is no superpower in cyberspace. Depending on the degree of capability and vulnerability, a small country can play a role as a superpower. A country with more dependence on cyberspace is more vulnerable. Americans depend on technology more than we do, so they are naturally more vulnerable,” he said.

"The US is using a hybrid threat against Iran, some of it through social networks. The US wants to provoke us, organize our people through social networks, media, cellphones and internet, and then hit the government. Well, they will limit their ability, if they disrupt internet," he said.
