Huseyn Veliyev - Trend:

Azerbaijan’s Azercosmos OJSC, which operates geostationary satellites Azerspace 1, Azerspace 2 and low-altitude satellite AzerSky, is studying the economic feasibility of launching new low-orbit satellites, the company told Trend.

Significant increase in the number of observation satellites and their technical capabilities over the past 10 years has contributed to the application of an innovative approach in this area, according to the company.

“Approval of the state program for development of remote sensing of the Earth for 2019-2022 is aimed at active usage of the resources of the existing Azersky satellite,” the company noted. “The main goal of the state program is to support the socio-economic and technological development of Azerbaijan through the use of satellite observation services. This state program will create the possibility of applying the latest technologies in remote sensing. Preparation is underway for the implementation of the state program, and the issues of its implementation will be discussed in the near future with the relevant structures.”

The company’s plans include using the resources of Azersky and other observation satellites in the fields of agriculture, environmental protection, emergency management, mining, land reclamation and water management, transportation and road infrastructure, development of tourism, cartography and town planning, state property management, cadastral surveying and navigation.

Within the strategic partnership between Azercosmos OJSC and Airbus Defense and Space, the Azerbaijani satellite operator also has the opportunity to use the resources of the Pleiades 1A and Pleiades 1B satellites, which allow surveying the Earth's surface.
