Bakcell, Azerbaijan’s first mobile operator, has presented the results of its activities in 2019, a source in Bakcell told Trend.

“In 2019, Bakcell 4G network became available in all Azerbaijani regions,” the source in Bakcell said. “Bakcell provides 4G services of the highest quality in all regions in Azerbaijan. Bakcell subscribers living in Baku and the Absheron peninsula, as well as in the central parts of all cities and districts in Azerbaijan (with the exception of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and the occupied territories) already have the opportunity to use the services of high-speed mobile internet.”

A representative of Bakcell noted that thanks to more than 8,000 base stations, the Bakcell network covers 99 percent of the population and 93 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory.

“In the first half of this year, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Education, Bakcell and AzEduNet company signed a protocol on cooperation,” the source added. “The main purpose of the document was to provide up to 700 educational institutions located in remote settlements with access to the internet and network services through the Azerbaijani educational network. As part of this cooperation, Bakcell provided free monthly internet traffic and mobile modems (data cards) for educational institutions for a period of three years.”

The company’s representative noted that one of the main events for 2019 was the signing of a partnership agreement between the INNOLAND Incubation and Acceleration Center of the State Agency for Public Services and Social Innovations under the President of Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijani first mobile operator.

The representative added that the main objective of this partnership is to support the ecosystem of entrepreneurship for technology startups in Azerbaijan and implement high level of cooperation serving the needs of developing technology entrepreneurs.

“In early 2019, Bakcell and INNOLAND held an event for local developers,” said the source. “Bakcell together with the INNOLAND Incubation and Acceleration Center held a Global Game Jam® (GGJ) event for local game developers. The Global Game Jam® (GGJ) is the world’s biggest hackathon on the creation of games, which is simultaneously held at special venues in different parts of the world. The Global Game Jam, a hackathon devoted to gaming technologies, allows people to come together to be creative, share experience and express themselves through video games.”

“Bakcell, together with the INNOLAND Incubation and Acceleration Center and the Waves Platform, held Azerbaijan’s first hackathon on the topic 'Integration of blockchain technologies',” the source noted. “The first hackathon in Azerbaijan dedicated to blockchain technology allowed local startups and developers to get more information about this technology and learn how to use it in projects. During the contest, participants had to complete the appropriate tasks using the global Waves Platform. This platform is focused on creating user blockchain tokens.”

In addition, in 2019, the Baku City Circuit Operations Company (BCC) and Bakcell signed a three-year sponsorship agreement to support the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, according to the source.

“The first mobile operator and provider of the fastest mobile internet in Azerbaijan, Bakcell implemented the biggest project to expand the LTE network in Azerbaijan,” the company said. “Since May 2019, in just four months, Bakcell installed LTE base stations equipped with 4.5G technologies. This unique project is being implemented for the first time in Azerbaijan and even in the entire region.”

This year the company received a number of awards, according to the source.

“Bakcell received a national award in the field of corporate social responsibility, an award from Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Economy; Ookla company recognized Bakcell’s mobile internet as the fastest in Azerbaijan, and Bakcell was awarded for “Best Corporate Style” at Bakutel 2019 exhibition,” the company noted.

“Also in 2019, Bakcell organized a two-day seminar for journalists,” the source said. “Journalists from about 30 leading Azerbaijani media were invited to participate in the seminar on the latest solutions and new products in the field of mobile telecommunications. The main objective of the traditional seminar organized by Bakcell for the sixth consecutive year is to educate local journalists in areas such as the basics and the latest trends in mobile communications, modern technology and innovations.”

The seminar helps to raise awareness in the field of mobile telecommunications, as well as increase the professionalism of journalists covering this industry, according to the source.

“In addition, in 2019, a number of events were held with the support of Bakcell, the source added.

“In the summer, the third edition of the M.A.P. International Theater Festival combining various forms of theatrical art was held in order to help viewers understand the intricacies of a wide range of forms of modern theater,” said the source. “This festival is a platform for communication, training, knowledge and experience sharing.”

Besides, a mass campaign “Let’s protect the Caspian Sea” was held in September in Baku, the source added.

“In the World Cleanup Day, in the coastal areas, a beach in Buzovna settlement was cleaned of garbage as part of the large-scale environmental campaign “Let’s protect the Caspian Sea”, which was attended by representatives of prestigious companies, government agencies, various organizations and hundreds of volunteers,” said the source.

“Bakcell has joined festivities dedicated to the celebration of Novruz Bayrami (a traditional Azerbaijani holiday which celebrates the New Year and the coming of spring),” the company noted. “So, the company became a sponsor of the Bahar Qalasi festival, organized by the Administration of Icherisheher State Historical-Architectural Reserve.”

The representative of the company added that Bakcell together with the US Embassy in Azerbaijan helped Azerbaijani schoolchildren to take part in the Genius Olympiad in the US.

“Bakcell celebrated International Children’s Day with children requiring special care and those deprived of parental care, living under the patronage of UAFA (United Aid for Azerbaijan) and the SOS Children's Villages - Azerbaijan Association,” the source said.

“Bakcell supported the growth of employment among women,” added the source. “The main objective of the project being implemented at the Women Resource Centers (WRCs) in Salyan and Sabirabad districts as part of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), together with the Public Association “Support to Social Development of Women in Sabirabad”, is to familiarize women from these regions with ICT tools to help them improve their knowledge and skills in this area and support them in the development of leadership skills, using new technologies.”

“As part of the project, a special website (www.azqrm.net ) was created that contains information on the activities of WRCs, women’s success stories, as well as information on personal development,” the company added. “The website also contains webinars aimed at improving qualification.”

The representative of Bakcell noted that at the beginning of 2019, Bakcell received the national award in the field of corporate social responsibility - the company became one of the owners of the first national award in corporate social responsibility sphere “Milli KSM Mukafati 2018”, and this became one of the important events of early 2019.

“Bakcell received an award in the nomination “Project of the Year for Supporting Young Entrepreneurs”,” the company said. “The jury consisted of representatives of Azerbaijan’s Economy Ministry, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs, the State Agency for Public Services and Social Innovations under the President of Azerbaijan, ASAN service (a state agency for public services to Azerbaijani citizens) and the Azerbaijani parliament, as well as representatives of various NGOs and private organizations.”
