Georgia approves broadband development strategy

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jan. 11

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Georgian government has approved a strategy for developing a broadband network for the next five years, which provides for the transformation of Georgia into an information and digital hub, Trend reports citing Georgian media.

According to the strategy, Georgia should have Internet at a speed of at least 100 megabits per second, while its production and administrative bodies are expected to reach 1 gigabit per second.

At the same time, an open broadband network will appear in the country in target zones, where there is still no Internet.

According to Minister of Economy Natia Turnava, in 2020 active construction of a broadband network will begin.

"In a new plan, we outlined the responsibility and terms, so that the active implementation of this program begins in 2020," Turnava said.

According to the Georgian National Communication Commission, a total of 901,800 Internet subscribers are registered in Georgia, including both individuals and legal entities.

The largest number of subscribers was recorded in Tbilisi, Batumi and Rustavi, while in the mountainous regions there are villages in which there is still no Internet.

The most difficult situation is in mountainous Ajaria in the areas of Shuhevi, Keda and Hulo, as well as in the areas of Tianeti and Svaneti.
