BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 26

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Mobile phones and smartphones worth of $114.5 million was imported from January through September 2020 in Georgia, Trend reports via the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

Decline totals to 15.9 percent year-on-year.

The reduction is less in the case of large store chains, but the condition is different from the private dealers.

According to private dealers, the purchase price of mobile devices abroad has increased, while people in Georgia are refraining from buying expensive models.

Dealers notes, that they avoid the import of mobile phones due to the depreciation of the national currency against the US dollar.

“We avoid importing expensive mobile phones from abroad due to the devaluation of the national currency against USD. The demand for mobile phones is significantly reduced by more than half a year. Customers prefer to buy used mobile phones. If the condition is not changed, half of the stores will be closed down”, private dealer Salome Grdzelishvili said.

As for the premium segment smartphone re-seller companies, demand is also grown on low-cost mobile phones.
