US McAfee tracks surge in publicly disclosed cyber incidents YTD

The number of publicly reported cyber incidents in the technology sector surged in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the fourth quarter of last year, the US McAfee anti-virus software company told Trend.

According to the company, the growth made up 54 percent.

Besides, the company noted that other areas which frequently faced targeted attacks were education (up 46 percent), finance and insurance (up 41 percent).

The total number of targeted attacks increased by 28 percent.

"Significant reduction in targeted attacks was recorded across vulnerabilities (153 percent), account hijackings (98 percent) and malware script (79 percent)," the company said in a statement.

A serious increase in threats (by 117 percent) during the specified period was recorded in the Coin Miner category (equipment for conducting transactions, collecting blocks for the blockchain).

"Attacks on IoT devices rose 55 percent due to Mirai worm/botnet’s activity, and on Linux - 38 percent," McAfee said.

Threats in the categories of malware for PowerShell (an automation tool from Microsoft) fell by 89 percent, malware for office apps by 87 percent, malware for MacOS by 70 percent, and ransomware by 50 percent.
