Communications sector holds 2.3% in GDP in Azerbaijan

In 2005 share of the Azerbaijani communications sector in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) made up 2.4%, Ali Abbasov, the Azerbaijan Minister for Communications and Information Technologies, stated to a board meeting of the Ministry held last Saturday on the results of 2005, Trend reports.

Abbasov said that in this period the growth pace of incomes in telecommunications sector comprised СЃС"ере СЃРѕСЃС'авиР"Р° 36% and 75.8% of all incomes (437.2m manats) fell on private sector.

In this period community services reached 55.2m manats in the structure of additional incomes comprising 7.3m manats (5.2%). Moreover, the number of Internet users made up 400,000-500,000.

Last year 57 radio-televisions stations and 137 branches of post offices were commissioned in the country, while a project on improvement of post network of Azerbaijan implemented jointly with the World Bank was sanctioned.

Along with the achievements in the telecommunications sectors, there are also some shortcomings in the distribution of pensions in the post offices, technical services, as well as construction of telephone lines, local and long-distance calls, the ministers underlined.
