Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend I.Khalilova / The European Union (EU) insists on canceling the monopoly of Aztelekom Production Unit (PU) on international communication channels, said the Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, Mahmud Mammadguliyev, on 30 May.

"It is the most significant aspect in the telecommunication sphere in the negotiations process of Azerbaijan's entrance into the World Trade Organization (WTO). The EU considers that eliminating Aztelekom's monopoly will further liberalize the market of the international telephone conversations," Mammadguliyev said.

The bilateral negotiations between Azerbaijan and the EU took place on 24 May 2007 in Brussels. In addition, the USA offers Azerbaijan to liberalize the telecommunication market. Prior to this, Azerbaijan asked for an eleven-year transition period, but the USA and EU only offered a maximum of three.

Moreover, the Government is currently considering uniting Aztelekom and Baktelekom.
