No Agreement Achieved on Mutual Transition of Azerbaijani and Russian Television Channels

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Тrend E.Huseynov / A meeting of a working group in Moscow in connection with a mutual transition of television channels of Azerbaijan and Russia has not yet reached a concrete agreement.

Gafar Jabiyev, a member of the working group and also a representative of the National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting, announced that a meeting at the Russian Ministry of Culture and Mass Communications on the 8th of June began with the discussions of detailed proposals submitted by working groups by Azerbaijan and Russia.

Russia did not include in its package of proposals the issue on transition of Azerbaijani television channels in Russia in a parity basis. After the persistence by the head of the Azerbaijani delegation, Khalaf Khalafov the Deputy Foreign Minister, the issue was included in the agenda.

According to a member of the Council, during the discussions the names of channels which are offered for mutual broadcasting were not publicized. Both sides came to an agreement, an initial document should resolve an issue on mutual transition. Though the opposite side proposed to change the resolution by the Council regarding the cessation of the transition of Russian television channels, the Azerbaijani delegation noted the importance of the resolution of this issue before the enactment of this agreement, i.e 10 July. The Russian side noted the importance of broadcasting the program in Azerbaijani on Russian television in the future.

As a result, the sides reached an agreement to develop a unified variant of a contract in 10 days and hold a next meeting. The venue and date of the talks will be determined through diplomatic correspondence.

At the beginning of January the Azerbaijan National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting made a decision on cessation of transition of foreign television channels in the territory of the country beginning from 10th of July.
