Working Group Completes Development of Azerbaijani ‘Popular Computer’ Project

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr S. Babayeva / A special working group is completing the development of 'Popular Computer' project, according to Azerbaijani Communications and IT Ministry.

After the recent discussions of the project within the visit of the Senior Vice-President of the Microsoft Corporation, Craig Mundie, to Baku with participation of Azerbaijani Communications and IT Minister, Ali Abbasov, the details were coordinated and it was considered expedient to complete the development of the initial draft of the project.

The core of the 'People's Computer' Project lies in presenting PC for long-term credits under low interest rates to poor strata of the Azerbaijani society. Different alternatives on financing both at the expense of the Government and external sources are currently being under consideration. Microsoft is expected to present licensed software, with Intel presenting relevant equipment on lax conditions.

According to the Ministry, the changes and the completions regard mainly stimulation of interest among the population in purchase of computers, as well as financial resources of the project.

The working group includes the experts from a number of Ministries, Intel and Microsoft companies.

According to the preliminary data collected by the Azerbaijan Telecommunication Ministry today, only 3-4 PCs fall at each 100 persons in the country. If the project is successfully implemented, then this figure may increase by more than five times

According to rough guess of the Communications and IT Ministry, 3-4 computers fall on each 100 people in Azerbaijan. The implementation of the project will enable a 5-fold increase of the index.
