Kazakhstan increases coal export, cargo turnover with China via railways

Coal transportation via Kazakhstan Railways increased by 11 percent in Apr. 2020 compared to Apr. 2019 and amounted to 8.5 million tons, Director General of KTZ — Freight transportation company Kairat Saurbayev said, Trend reports with reference to the company.
Saurbayev said that the overall cargo loading of the Kazakhstan Railways networks was over 20 million tons of cargo in Apr. 2020.
Of the total volume of coal transported, some 5.6 million tons were transported across Kazakhstan, which is 12 percent more than in Apr. 2019. Some 2.9 million tons of coal were exported, which is 9 percent more than in Apr. 2019.
Transportation of iron ore and manganese ore increased by 31 percent in Apr. 2020, grinding products by 12 percent, non-ferrous ores and sulfur raw materials by 13.3 percent. Over 640,000 tons of grain were transported, including 425,000 tons which were exported.
Operational freight turnover exceeded last year's level by 3.5 percent in Apr. 2020 and amounted to net 18.7 billion ton-kilometers. This indicator exceeded net 73 billion ton-kilometers over the period of first four months, which is 2.6 percent higher than during the same period of last year.
“Operational cargo turnover increase over the four months was achieved due to an export traffic increase in April by net 0.42 billion ton-kilometers and transit traffic by net 1.07 billion ton-kilometers compared to last year. The traffic growth is continuing in May,” Saurbayev said.
Overall, 80.5 million tons of cargo were loaded over the period of first four months of 2020. This includes 34.6 million tons of coal, including 25.5 million tons transported across Kazakhstan, which is 4.8 percent higher compared to the same period of 2020.
Additionally, 2.9 million tons of grain were loaded, as well as 7.1 million tons of non-ferrous ores and sulfur raw materials, 5 million tons of construction cargo, and 8.3 million tons of iron and manganese.
Saurbayev added that an increase of international rail cargo traffic is observed, including from and to China.
“The volume of rail cargo transport in April between Kazakhstan and China grew by 48 percent and amounted to 1.8 million tons. In general, over the 4 months of this year, this figure amounted to over 6 million tons, which is 28 percent more compared to the same period of 2019,” he said.
