Cargo transportation volume down in Kazakhstan amid COVID-19

A total of 358.2 million tons of cargo were transported in Kazakhstan by all means of transport in July 2020, which is 8.3 percent less than in July 2019, Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s Statistics Committee.

In turn, the volume of cargo transported over seven months of 2020 amounted to 2.1 billion tons, which is 7.5 percent less year-on-year compared to 2.2 billion in during the same period last year.

The majority of the cargo was transported in Kazakhstan’s Karaganda region. The transportation volume in the region amounted to 63.3 million tons in July and to 391.6 million tons over seven months of 2020, which is 20.4 percent and 13.7 percent less than during the same period last year, respectively.

Karaganda region is followed by East Kazakhstan region with 61.5 million tons of cargo transported in July 2020 (down by 1.4 percent compared to July 2019). The volume of cargo transported in East Kazakhstan region over seven months of 2020 amounted to 342.08 million tons, which indicates a 2.3 percent decrease compared to 350.2 million over the same period last month.

Kostanay region takes third place country-wide by the cargo transported in July 2020 (30.7 million tons, increase by 4.6 percent). The volume of cargo transported in Kostanay region from January through July 2020 amounted to 154.3 million, which is 9.4 percent less than during the same period last year (170.4 million tons).

The least cargo volume was transported in West Kazakhstan region. The transported cargo volume stood at 3.3 million tons in July 2020, which is 6.2 percent less than in July 2019. The volume of cargo transported from January through July was 20.3 million, which is 4.6 percent less year-on-year.
