The Khaf-Herat rail route with a capacity of 3.5 million tons of transit cargo from the CIS countries, Turkey, and the Persian Gulf will soon be inaugurated, the Head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (known as RAI) Saeed Rasouli announced.

“Khaf-Herat railway route is a total of 218 km in four sections, the first and second sections of which is from Khaf to Shamtigh inside Iran with a length of about 76 km and the third section from Shamtigh to Rozanak with a length of 62 km inside Afghanistan,” Head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (known as RAI) Saeed Rasouli said, Trend reports citing IRNA.

Rasouli went on to say that the fourth section is from Rozanak to Harat, which is currently being built by the Afghan side.

The CEO of RAI said that “The part which construction has been completed and will be put into operation is the Khaf-Rozanak railway route, of which 76 km is in Iran and 62 km is in Afghanistan. The opening date of this railway route will be in the second half of November," he noted.

“From the opening day, the official operation will begin by exchanging freight trains. The number of trains used in this railway route depends on the demand for cargo and passengers,” he said. “It is definitely not possible to estimate demand from the first day of opening.”

Iran's rail borders with other neighboring countries are located at Sarakhs, Razi, Mirjaveh, Jolfa, and Lotfabad borders.
