Revenue from transporting cargo via railways surges in Kazakhstan despite COVID-19

Kazakhstan’s revenue from the transportation of cargo, luggage, and cargo luggage via railway transportation amounted to 939.4 billion tenge ($2.2 billion) in 2020, which is 5.6 percent more than during the same period of 2019, Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s Statistics Committee.

Revenues from the transportation of cargo, luggage, and cargo luggage via railway in Dec. 2020 amounted to 87.4 billion tenge ($208.1 million), which is a 7.2-percent increase in comparison to the same month of 2019.

The volume of cargo, luggage, and cargo luggage transported via railway during the reporting period amounted to 413.3 million tons, climbing 1.3 percent compared to the same period of last year (36.8 million tons in Dec. 2020, up by 1.9 percent year-on-year).

Cargo turnover amounted to 302.1 billion ton-kilometers rising by 4.5 percent in comparison to last year (27.3 billion in Dec. 2020, an increase of 4.3 percent).

In turn, Kazakhstan’s revenue from passenger transportation amounted to 44.8 billion tenge ($106.8 million) in 2020, which is a 59.2 percent slump in comparison to last year. December’s revenue from passenger transportation was 3.4 billion tenge ($8.1 million), which is 62.7 percent less than in Dec. 2019.

The number of transported passengers amounted to 11.3 million people, which is a 48 percent decline compared to the same period of last year (988,720 passengers in Dec. 2020, down by 46.8 percent).

The passenger turnover amounted to 8.6 billion passenger-kilometers (pkm) which compared to the same period of last year is a decrease of 51.2 percent. December’s passenger turnover was 710.5 million pkm (48.7 percent decrease year-on-year).
