Port of Baku records growth in annual turnover despite pandemic

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 24

The trade turnover of the Baku International Sea Trade Port (Baku port), despite the COVID-19 pandemic, increased by 20 percent in 2020, Director-General of the Baku port, Taleh Ziyadov said, the Baku port told Trend.

According to Ziyadov, the number of overloaded heavy vehicles (TIR) and containers was a record over the past 30 years.

"During the reporting year, the number of TIRs increased by 28 percent compared to 2019 and amounted to 43,218 units. The number of exported containers increased by 15 percent and reached 40,345 containers in TEU equivalent (TEU is one 20-foot container). The volume of cargo transported at the dry cargo terminal increased 2.8 times and amounted to 711,700 tons. So, in comparison with the indicators of the last 5 years, the number of TIR has increased five times, containers - three times. The volume of cargo at the dry cargo terminal has increased 3.5 times," said the port director-general.

Ziyadov said that the trainings of the Antwerp Port Training Center cover a wide range of areas and invited members of the American-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) to take part in them, informing the audience about the development strategy of the Port of Baku for the next two years, agreements, achieved with leading logistics centers and transport companies in Asia and Europe, as well as innovations in the transport sector of Azerbaijan.

The Port Training Center of the Port of Antwerp has been operating since 1977 and is a world-famous center. Since its inception, more than 15,000 people from all over the world have received vocational training in this center.
