High freight rates significantly raise global prices of commercial ships

The secondhand prices of commercial ships have amounted to nearly $1 trillion as of April 2021, Trend reports referring to the UK Clarkson Research analytical agency.

According to the agency, from September of last year to date, the price index has risen by 33 percent, reaching the highest level in the last seven years - the rise in prices is mainly observed for container ships.

Moreover, amid high freight rates, the overall price index for these vessels has risen 47 percent since June 2020.

“So, the price of a container ship with a service life of 10 years with a capacity of 6,600 TEU-containers has grown from $29 million to $50 million. At the same time, the price of a container ship with a similar operating life with a capacity of 4,500 TEU increased from $25.5 million to $35 million,” said the agency.

Besides, according to the agency, an increase was recorded in the price index for dry cargo ships.

The price index for used dry cargo vessels increased by 31 percent. The price for a dry cargo vessel with a service life of 10 years grew by 40 percent to $14.5 million.

According to forecasts of the agency, in the next two years, prices for the dry cargo vessels will significantly rise.
