Kazakhstan sees drastic increase in transit cargo transport by railways

The value of transit cargo transport via Kazakhstan Railways has increased by 32 percent in 2020 compared to 2019, Zhanibek Tayzhanov, Deputy Chairman of the Kazakh Transport Committee under the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructural Development said, Trend reports citing Kazakh media.

“Kazakhstan’s becoming of a transit hub was accompanied by the implementation of a number of projects, including the connection of the central regions with the western ones - Zhezkazgan-Beineu railroad, an increase in the throughput capacity of the Almaty-Shu section - the construction of second tracks, the creation of the necessary port and terminal infrastructure - the ports of Aktau, Kuryk, dry the port of Khorgos, trade and logistics centers and Borzhakty-Ersai,” he said.

As a result of these projects implementation, 2020’s volumes of transit traffic exceed the indicators of 2016 by 3.6 times. Thus, despite the COVID-associated crisis in 2020, the container transit traffic amounted to 876,000 TEU, which was 32 percent more than in 2019.

In his words, the volume of railways transportation exceeded 800,000 TEU over 1Q2021, which is 36 percent more compared to the same period last year.

This includes transit container traffic of more than 530,000 TEU, which also is 44 percent more year-on-year. The railways transportation plan for 2021 is about one million TEU. This indicator is also to grow to 1.6 million TEU by 2025.
