BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 14. Iran's Khazar Sea Shipping Lines Company transits goods mainly to Russia and Kazakhstan, Managing Director of Khazar Sea Shipping Lines Company Davood Tafti told Trend.

He said that the goods are transited from the Iran’s Amirabad, Anzali, Astara, Noshahr and Caspian ports to the Russian Astrakhan and Makhachkala ports and the Kazakh’s Aktau port and vice versa.

“In addition, there is a cargo transportation line between Iran, China and Kazakhstan. In this direction, cargo is transported through Iran’s Caspian and Amirabad ports to Aktau port and from there to China,” he added.

According to Tafti, the Khazar Sea Shipping Lines Company has proposed to the Iranian Ministry of Roads and Urban Development to complete the construction of the Rasht-Caspian INTSC railway as soon as possible in order to increase transit through the Caspian Sea.

"The absence of this railway line prevents transportation of large volume of cargo in this direction," he said.

“The company has even proposed to make certain discounts for cargo owners to transport goods from Rasht to the Caspian port via trucks. Cargo owners should be offered such prices that they are encouraged to carry their goods in this direction,” Tafti said.

He also pointed out that currently, every ship docking at an Iranian port in the Caspian Sea, must pay a duty. Meanwhile, the company has offered to halt this practice, and have the ships only pay duties if they're docking at the main ports.

Tafti went on to say that the idea was offered because cargo inflows to some Iranian ports in the Caspian Sea, such as Noshahr and Astara, are low, and bringing cargo o these ports isn't profitable for docking ships.

"Limiting paying duties only to major ports, may result in smaller ports increasing activity," he explained.
