BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 26. The volume of cargo transited through Iranian roads increased by 20 percent during the first six months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through September 22, 2022), compared to the same period last Iranian year, Director General of the Transit and International Affairs Department of Iran Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization (RMTO) Javad Hedayati said, Trend reports citing Iranian Ministry of Roads and Urban Development.

According to Hedayati, in total, 5 million tons of cargo were transited through Iranian roads in 6 months.

“Meanwhile, in the 6th month of the current Iranian year (August 23 through September 22, 2022) alone, 791,000 tons of cargo were transited via the country’s roads,” he added.

The director general emphasized that the reason for the increase is the reopening of transit routes between Iran and Turkmenistan.

As reported, Turkmenistan has announced that it will allow cargo transit through its territories from June 1, 2022.

Hedayati also said that currently, cargo from Türkiye to Central Asia and vice versa is transited through Iran by 100 trucks per day.

"Before the European sanctions against Russia, the west direction (Russia-Azerbaijan-Iran) of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) was more active. However, due to the imposition of sanctions against Russia and the closure of Russia's borders with European countries, the demand for cargo transportation has increased through the east or middle direction (Persian Gulf-Iran-Central Asia-Russia), as well as the south direction (China-Turkmenistan-Iran-Turkey) of the mentioned corridor," he said.

The foundation of the ‘International North-South Transport Corridor’ was laid on the basis of an intergovernmental agreement signed between Russia, Iran, and India on September 12, 2000.

In total, 13 countries have ratified the agreement, including Azerbaijan, India, Iran, Russia, Türkiye, etc.

The purpose of creating a corridor is to reduce the delivery time of cargo from India to Russia, as well as to North and West Europe. Delivery time on the current route is more than 6 weeks, it is expected to be reduced to 3 weeks via North-South Transport Corridor.
