Government officials in Iran are working to keep the price of imported cars from climbing.

At this time, importers of foreign-made automobiles have to use dollars bought in Iran's free currency market for their imports which will drive up prices, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reports.

Iran's official exchange rate of 12,260 rials to the dollar is significantly lower than the 19,000 rials to the dollar available on the free market. The government makes its cheaper rate available to those importers who deal with essential materials. Luxury good importers have to buy the currency on the free market and foreign autos are considered luxury goods.

Seyed Javad Taghavi, the head of Iran's Organisation for the Protection of Consumers and Producers said the Article One Commission will meet to discuss adjusting tariffs. Iran's trade, economy and agriculture minister are members of the Article One Commission.

As for domestically produced automobile prices increasing, Mr Taghavi said only one or two new models will see their prices going up.
