Belarus has expressed an interest in participating in the East-West transnational information superhighway, the Azerbaijani Communications and IT Ministry reported.

According to the ministry, Belarusian Communications and Informatization Minister Nikolay Panteley expressed his country's interest at a meeting with Azerbaijani Communications and IT Minister Ali Abbasov.

Abbasov then invited his Belarusian counterpart to take part in the Sixteenth Azerbaijani International BakuTel Telecommunications Exhibition on Nov. 3-6 at the Baku Expo Center.

Earlier Abbasov said a memorandum will likely be signed at the exhibition on the establishment of a consortium to create the information superhighway.

In September, a U.N. meeting will also be held with the participation of countries and transnational communications operators interested in the project.

The adoption of a resolution by the U.N. on establishment of the East-West information highway will eliminate all unsolved organizational issues in laying the Caspian segment of the fiber-optic cable backbone. According to the political resolution, all regional countries were recommended to take measures to implement the project. The project will be implemented under Azerbaijan's initiative.

The East-West project seeks to unite 20 countries and play an important role in regional development. The project aims to eliminate the " informational gap" between countries in Western Europe and the Pacific.
