New law on migration discussed in Almaty

It will now be much easier for ethnic Kazakhs living in other countries to become Kazakh citizens, Caspionet reported. This is ensured by the new law on migration. The document was discussed in Almaty by representatives of the migration police and members of the council of ethnic repatriation. According to the meeting participants, the main changes will affect the period of acquiring citizenship, as it was reduced from 6 to 3 months. The system and procedure of registration of repatriates, providing quotas and a one-time allowance was simplified as well. However, special attention was paid to the point related to the lump-sum aid because of frequent fraud cases. Foreign nationals who become registered in the migration police as repatriates received benefits and returned home. The new law makes it impossible to accomplish. Repatriates won't receive any funds until they acquire citizenship. Meanwhile, more than one million repatriates became Kazakh citizens over the years of independence. More than 12 thousand foreign citizens apply for Kazakh citizenship on an annual basis.
