General Prosecutor's Office: Number of people died in riots increases in Kazakhstan

About 11 people died in the riots in the city of Zhanaozen, the Kazakh General Prosecutor's Office official representative Nurdaulet Suindikov said at a briefing in Astana on Saturday.

"Last night another man was found dead," he said. About 86 victims were injured."

Suindikov said that Zhanaozen interior department deputy head is in a coma, six policemen are injured.

Mass riots occurred in the Kazakh city of Zhanaozen, Mangistau region on December 16-17. According to the preliminary data, about 10 people died and several were injured, Kazakh prosecutor general Askhat Daulbaev said.
Suindikov said that about 70 participants of mass riots in Zhanaozen were detained.

"About 46 facilities were burned during mass riots," he said. At present, about 70 participants were detained. The most active rioters were identified. The measures are taken to arrest them."

As a result of the riots, the building of the local authority, a hotel, the office of Ozenmunaygaz company. The property of physical and legal entities was destroyed. The cars were burned.

The operational investigative group headed by Interior Minister Kalmuhanbet Kasimov left for Zhanaozen to investigate the incident.

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev created a special commission to investigate the incident and issued a decree to announce the state of emergency in the city of Zhanaozen for 20 days.
