Kazakh Zhanaozen city’s oil workers’ average salary hits $2,026

Average salary of operating personnel of KazMunaiGas Exploration and Production's (KMG EP) subsidiary Ozenmunaigaz, which is located in Zhanaozen, after payment of all taxes, is about 300,000 tenge ($2,026), KMG EP said on Tuesday.
"Over the past few years, salary of oil workers in Zhanaozen increased more than twice," the company's statement says.
Since May the Mangistau region has repeatedly experienced strikes by oil companies' employees, demanding higher wages. The court found the protest action illegal. The firms dismissed thousands of workers for striking and absenteeism. Some of the strikers returned to their jobs and new staff were hired in the place of those dismissed. The companies stated that oil production volume may drop because of the protests during the year.
On Friday mass riots took place in the Kazakh oil town of Zhanaozen in the Mangistau region which killed 14 and injured about 90 people. President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed a decree to impose a state of emergency in the area from Saturday.
According to independent experts, the main driving force behind the riots was not oil workers, but the religious extremists who have become active in recent times, and the regime's opponents. According to the Prosecutor General's Office, situation in the Zhanaozen city is gradually stabilizing.
According to KMG EP, in January 2007, average monthly salary of a well-servicing operator of fourth category hit 147, 832 tenge ($998). Three years later, in 2010, this amount increased to 296,092 tenge. And in 2011, taking into account introduction of a new payment system, as well as indexation in early year given inflation salary of the same worker hit 316,719 tenge ($2,139).Average monthly salary of workers with different skills differs.
Engineering staff with higher education and relevant experience, earn higher salaries than workers.
In addition, the company has social obligations on collective agreement that the trade union and the employer signed in February 2011. As part of this agreement KMG EP spends about one million tenge ($6,753) per employee per year - for recreation, food, children's holidays, vacation payment, medical ayment, etc.
At the same time average monthly salary in the country, according to statistics, in October amounted to 90,980 tenge ($614). The minimum salary in Kazakhstan 2012 will amount to 17,439 tenge ($118).
