Kazakh Prosecutor General, UN envoy discuss situation in Zhanaozen

Kazakh Prosecutor General Askhat Daulbayev discussed the situation in Zhanaozen with Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Regional Representative for Central Asia Armen Harutyunyan, Prosecutor General's Office said on Thursday.

Daulbayev briefed Harutyunyan on the current situation in the Zhanaozen city, the measures taken to stabilize and restore the city. Daulbayev emphasized openness and transparency of the prosecution and invited experts from the UN to participate in the investigation of the incident.

Particular attention was paid to the protection of human rights. The sides also discussed a number of issues of bilateral judicial cooperation.

On Friday mass riots took place in the Kazakh oil town of Zhanaozen in the Mangistau region which killed 15 and injured about 100 people. Buildings and cars were set on fire, property of physical and legal entities was destroyed.
President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed a decree to impose a state of emergency in the area from Saturday. According to the Prosecutor General's Office, situation in the Zhanaozen city is gradually stabilizing.
