Some 18 people were detained on suspicion of taking part in the mass riots in Zhanaozen, Nuradaulet Suindikov, a spokesman for the general prosecutor's office said in a briefing in Astana on Thursday.

At least 20 people have been detained with 18 arrested under the court's jurisdiction, Mr Suindikov said. Previously 16 people had previously been reported as having been arrested.

Mass riots hit the Kazakh oil town of Zhanaozen in the Mangistau region on Dec.16 killing 17 and injuring more than 100 people. Buildings and cars were burned and property of individuals and legal bodies destroyed. Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev declared a state of emergency in Zhanaozen from Dec. 17 to Jan. 5.
