Kazakh Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton discussed prospects of bilateral relations at the meeting in Brussels on Feb. 2, Kazakh Foreign Ministry reported.

Within the negotiation, the two parties also exchanged views on the international agenda, including the situation around Iran and Syria.

Moreover, Kazykhanov urged the European party to liberalize visa regime between Kazakhstan and Europe and the system of readmission.

Kazykhanov invited Ashton to pay an official visit to Kazakhstan.

According to the Ministry, the bilateral cooperation with the E.U. is one of the strategic priorities for Kazakhstan's foreign policy.

The E.U. is the largest economic partner of Kazakhstan. Roughly 50 percent of Kazakhstan's foreign trade and more than a third of foreign investments in Kazakhstan's economy fall on the E.U. Kazakh-European foreign trade turnover hit $50 billion in 2011. Moreover, EU countries invested some $65.7 billion in Kazakhstan's economy from 1993 to 2011.

Currently, a new agreement on partnership between Kazakhstan and the E.U. is developing, which will cover the entire spectrum of political, economic and humanitarian relations.
