Astana International Airport in Kazakhstan has been fined more than 13 million tenge ($ 1 - 153.24 tenge), the aviation transport prosecutor of Astana Nurlan Ahmetbaev told reporters.
"An inspection over the spill of jet fuel took place in early May, the results of which revealed violations of environmental laws. Appropriate professional judgment of the authorized bodies has been obtained. The airport was presented with a requirement to eliminate violations of the law through liquidation of the consequences of the spill," Ahmetbaev said.
According to him, administrative proceedings have been instituted in respect of the airport and administrative fines imposed in the amount of 13.6 million tenge.
In early June, ecologists discovered a leak of kerosene into the Yesil River. Fuel spilled from the pipeline, which, according to the Metropolitan Department of Ecology, belongs to the International Airport of Astana. According to Ahmetbaev, this pipeline, which had previously been operated for the supply of petroleum products for aircraft's subsequent refueling, was dismantled.
"The pipeline is not currently in use. Overall, jet fuel did not spill into the Yesil River, fencing was placed and everything localized," he stressed.
According to the prosecutor, audit materials are sent to the prosecuting authorities for appropriate action.
