Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry has developed a special plan to inform the population about the nuclear fuel bank's activity in Kazakhstan,the country's Foreign Minister Erlan Idrisov said on Wednesday, speaking during Government Hour at the country's parliament.
"The ministry has developed a plan for informing the population about the activity of the nuclear fuel bank in Kazakhstan. In addition, the conditions of storage of nuclear fuel are being discussed with the IAEA," he said.
According to him, placement of the international nuclear fuel bank in Kazakhstan doesn't place any threat towards the country's ecology.
"The IAEA Secretary General visited recently and we organised an interview with him so that he gives a full picture of the meaning and essence of a nuclear fuel bank which does not cause any environmental threats," the Minister said.
In 2009 Kazakhstan initiated the placement of an international nuclear fuel bank in its territory under the auspices of the IAEA. The bank envisages the storage of low-enriched uranium for the production of fuel elements for the NPP in a gaseous form that does not pose any radiation threat. Any state wishing to develop nuclear energy will be able to apply to Kazakhstan with a request for fuel for its own NPP.
Last week members of the Kazakh media wrote that the bank of low-enriched uranium cannot be placed in the East Kazakhstan province due to seismic activity in the region.
Kazakhstan and the IAEA agreed on the text of the country's agreement on placement of the organisation's international low-enriched uranium bank on the country's territory.
