Kazakh city of Almaty significantly improved its position in the Global Financial Centres Index (GFCI), going 15 positions up and ranking 43rd among 83 international financial centers, Kazakhstan's National Bank (NBK) said Sept. 24.

"In the Eastern Europe-Central Asia region Almaty ranks second coming after Istanbul," NBK said. "Almaty is followed by Prague, Warsaw, St. Petersburg, Budapest, Moscow, Tallinn and Athens."

The NBK said this is a significant achievement in the GFCI, which includes over 25,000 responses given to an online questionnaire by over 3,000 professionals in the investment sector.

The GFCI's aim is to study the level of competitiveness of the main financial centers in the world.

"In March 2014, Almaty was for the first time included to the GFCI and ranked 58th in the official list of international financial centers," according to a message from the NBK.

The Global Financial Centres Index, or simply GFCI, is a specialized methodology of rating 83 international financial centers, developed by Z/Yen Group Limited, for the City of London, a municipality in the British capital of London.
