The newly appointed ambassador of the US to Kazakhstan, George A. Krol has arrived in Astana today, the US Embassy in Kazakhstan said Feb. 3.

The embassy said that Krol was sworn in as the US Ambassador to Kazakhstan on Jan. 8, and he looks forward to presenting his credentials to the Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

Previously, Ambassador Krol served as US Ambassador to Uzbekistan for three and a half years. He is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, holding the senior rank of Minister-Counselor and served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs.

Ambassador Krol joined the Foreign Service in 1982 and served as US Ambassador to Belarus 2003-2006. He has also served in Warsaw, New Delhi, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev, and has held several domestic assignments including as Director of the State Department's Office of Russian Affairs, and as Special Assistant to the Ambassador-at-large for the New Independent States.

He has also taught at the National War College and was a member of the State Department's Senior Seminar. He is the recipient of several State Department Meritorious and Superior Honor awards.

Ambassador Krol is a graduate of Harvard University and Oxford University, England.
