BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 28. The EU-Kazakhstan Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (EPCA) provides a solid ground for deepening cooperation with Kazakhstan in the area of sustainable connectivity and creating new opportunities for trade and investment, Maciej Adam Madalinski, Head of Political, Press and Information Section at the EU Delegation in Kazakhstan told Trend.

As Madalinski explained, in order to open up new opportunities in trade and investment in Kazakhstan, effective alternative reliable efficient trade routes between Europe and Asia should be developed.

“The EU is contributing to these efforts with a study looking into the most sustainable transport connections with Central Asia,” he noted.

According to the representative of the EU delegation, there is a growing interest in closer cooperation with Kazakhstan in the area of sustainable connectivity, in particular modern, reliable, and efficient railway and railway passenger transportation, the rapid development of civil aviation, and modern and reliable digital networks.

“While the diversification of trade routes and the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), or Middle Corridor, between Europe and Asia have been on the table for quite some time, it is becoming ever more pressing in today’s context. As we all know, the so-called Northern Corridor has so far been the primary rail connection between Europe and China, going through either Mongolia or Kazakhstan and in any case also Russia. The EU is seeing partner countries (as well as Member States) now expressing renewed interest in accelerating the development of alternative routes between Europe and Asia/China that would not go through Russia, but through Central Asia and the Caspian and Black Seas instead,” he said.

As the biggest Central Asian country, Kazakhstan has a vital role to play in the Eurasian transcontinental trade, especially within the scope of the EU Global Gateway strategy, Madalinski added.
