BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 27. Kazakhstan works out the possibility of expanding the Shymkent refinery’s capacity from 6 to 9 million tons a year, Alikhan Smailov, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, said, Trend reports, citing the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan.

Smailov noted that consumption of refined oil products increases annually, especially during fieldwork and heating season.

According to Smailov, the expansion project will enable Kazakhstan to fulfill existing domestic demand and provide job opportunities for local residents.

He added that the Government is reforming the market for fuels and lubricants, including the transfer of all oil refineries from the processing to the marketing principle of operation.

Kazakhstan is actively trying to increase the output of key oil refineries. In order to achieve this goal, the Central Asian country modernizes existing refineries and looks to build new ones to support the existing production. The government revealed plans to construct a medium size refinery in Jezkazgan located in the Ulytau region in November 2022.
