Visit of the Russian Foreign Minister to Tajikistan has allowed the parties to resolve the major issues of bilateral relations, the chief specialist of the Centre for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Vafo Niyatbekov, believes.

The visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to Tajikistan, timed to the 20th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries, was held on Tuesday.

Following the visit the parties signed bilateral agreements, including agreement on the presence of Russian military base in Tajikistan.

In addition, Lavrov called on Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to sit down to talks.

The expert believes the visit of the Russian Foreign Minister solved two main issues on the agenda of bilateral relations.

The main question, according to Niyatbekov, is a presence of the Russian military base and other facilities on the territory of Tajikistan.

"The parties agreed, and subsequently specialized agencies will have to work out their details," the expert told Trend by telephone from Dushanbe. He said the agreement reached will allow to remove the issue from the agenda of bilateral relations.

The second question, which is also important for Tajikistan, is a relationship with Uzbekistan, he said.

"Russia has assumed the role of a mediator between the two countries," he said.

Niyatbekov believes Russia obtained from Tajikistan information on Uzbekistan's actions, and it's likely that Uzbekistan will present in future its vision of the situation to Russia.

"The fact of the Russian mediation in this matter can be assessed positively," he said.

The Russian military base in Tajikistan is the largest land base outside of Russia, which has about 7,000 servicemen. It is an important element in the overall security system of the Central Asian region. The base was founded in 2004 on the basis of the 201st motorized rifle division stationed in Tajikistan. The base is stationed in the three garrisons in the cities of Dushanbe, Kurgan-yube and Kulyab.
