A campaign will start from Dec. 14 to nominate candidates for the post of Turkmenistan president, the Central Election Commission (CEC) said on Wednesday.

"The elections are planned to be conducted as part of the further democratisation of Turkmen society and to enable the people to take responsibility for the fate of their country," the CEC said. "These elections must be held in an atmosphere of national unity and cohesion."

The presidential elections in Turkmenistan are scheduled for February 12, 2012. Around 2307 polls will be open which is more than previously and includes 29 polls abroad.

According to legislation, the CEC will decide to register a candidate for the presidency if there is an order from the central body of political parties, public associations, or joint meetings of relevant bodies.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has recently said that the presidential elections next year will take place on a democratic, alternative basis, using the principles of democracy, openness and transparency. He also stressed that they will be monitored by national and foreign observers.

Turkmen Parliamentary members also stated that the next presidential elections in the country will be based on the Constitution and take into account the UN and OSCE international electoral standards.

This topic was discussed during the recent meetings of President Berdimuhamedov with OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Robert Blake.

According to the Constitution, the President of Turkmenistan must be a citizen of and born in Turkmenistan, aged at least 40 and no older than 70 years, know the state language, have resided in Turkmenistan over the past 15 years and have worked in state bodies, public associations, enterprises in institutions and organisations. The Presidential term is five years.
