Ashgabat hosted a regular meeting of the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda of Turkmenistan over preparations for the forthcoming elections of members of the Gengeshi (local authorities), the CEC reported.

Elections are scheduled for August 19. The agenda includes a number of issues: the creation of constituencies for the election of members of the Gengeshi in the territories of towns in the etraps (provinces), settlements, gengeshliks, as well as the formation of polling stations and district election commissions of cities in etraps, settlements and gengeshliks.

At this stage the nomination of candidates in the composition of election commissions continues.

Candidates for commission members are employees of various sectors of the national economy, education, health, science and culture are nominated by public organisations and associations, including the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan, the Youth Organisation of Turkmenistan named after Mahtumkuli and the Women's Union of Turkmenistan and others.

The election campaign was organised in accordance with the Law of Turkmenistan 'On election of members of the People's Council and Gengeshi'.

'Members of the Central Election Commission expressed confidence that the coming social and political campaign will be another important step towards deepening the democratic processes and acting as a reliable foundation for the successful implementation of progressive reforms aimed at furthering the prosperity of Turkmenistan', a statement said.
