Turkmenistan expects an important socio-political event - the election of members of local self-government - Gengeshi, which is scheduled for August 20, the country's media outlets reported on Saturday.

Elections will be held in accordance with national legislation and international standards - on a competitive basis.

"One of the main tasks of the election of gengeshe members is to elect to the local government bodies the most respected and genuinely national representatives who can adequately perform duties assigned by the law," the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper writes.

Law of Turkmenistan "On Gengeshi" confers broad powers on Gengesh.

These include: the definition of basics of economic, social and cultural development of its territory, approval of the local budget and report on its implementation, the definition of measures for rational use of natural resources and environmental protection; the question of submitting to district administration of suggestion on the need to develop local area, monitoring the sanitary condition of human settlements, water sources, housing, trading enterprises, schools and others.

On the main election day district polling stations will be open from 7 am to 7 pm. More than two million voters are expected to come to polls.

In total, 12,309 candidates claim 6,100 mandates of gengeshi members.
