CIS countries’ agricultural industry to be discussed in Ashkhabad

A meeting of the Intergovernmental Council on agricultural issues will be held in Ashkahabad on October 12, an official Turkmen source reported.

The event will be held by the CIS executive committee with the assistance of the Ministry of Agriculture and Turkmen MFA. An international scientific and practical conference on the development of food security in the CIS is going to be held prior to the meeting.

The first forum of the CIS's agricultural producers with participation of representatives of authoritative international organisations was convened in 2009 in the Turkmen capital. IKARDA (International centre of agricultural research in arid regions), CIMMYT (International Centre of wheat and corn development) and the EC TACIS programme took part in the forum.

Prospects of cooperation in the field of innovation technologies and know how in production and the processing of agricultural production, supply of special equipment and the rational use of biological resources were the subjects of discussion.

Turkmenistan will host the forum due to its chairmanship in CIS in 2012.

In total, 31 events are to be held in the CIS under Turkmenistan's chairmanship. The meeting of the Council of the Heads of States will be held in Ashkhabad in November.
The forum of art and science intellectuals of CIS countries is among the big events planned to be held in Turkmenistan.

Official Ashkhabad declared its participation in the CIS structure as an associated member in 2005 with reference to its permanent neutrality status, recognised and supported by the UN.
Several CIS events have been held in Turkmenistan in recent years. A film festival, the meeting of the Council of MFA's, the Intergovernmental Council on Standardisation, Metrology and Certification, the meeting of the Council of CIS Border Troop Commanders and the summit of the Heads of States, and the CIS Economic Council meeting.
