Turkmen Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov have drawn the attention of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly in New York to energy security in the world, the UN News Centre said today.
The minister urged to consider the issue of forming the international legal instrument to ensure the functioning of the energy supply system, taking into account the interests of producers, transit countries and consumers of hydrocarbon resources during this session as part of President Berdimuhamedov's initiative.
Thus, it was proposed to prepare a General Assembly draft resolution on the establishment of appropriate expert group.
A Turkmen representative said that his country, being one of the largest energy exporters and having the fourth largest reserves of hydrocarbon resources, responsibly and consistently calls for creating a stable and reliable system of international energy supplies.
He added that there is a need for making consensus decisions at the UN level, which would form the basis for creating universal political and legal mechanisms governing global cooperation in the energy sphere.
According to BP, Turkmenistan ranks fourth on natural gas reserves in the world after Russia, Iran and Qatar. At this stage, the country exports natural gas to China, Iran and Russia.
An additional gas pipeline to Russia (the Caspian gas pipeline - through Kazakhstan), to Europe (Trans-Caspian gas pipeline - as part of the Nabucco or AGRI via the Caspian Sea through Azerbaijan) and India (Trans-Afghan gas pipeline through Pakistan) are among the planned gas pipelines from Turkmenistan.
Ashgabat's senior representative from the UN rostrum in New York also proposed to establish a regional center for technologies related to climate change in Central Asia and the Caspian region together with the United Nations.
According to the information, such an organization will enable the countries in these regions to strengthen the cooperation on environmental security.
"It is not a secret that Central Asia and the Caspian Sea region are the regions with the difficult environmental conditions," Turkmen Minister said.
Ashgabat also proposes to create a sub-regional center on disarmament in Asia.
