“Goknar-2013” anti-drug operation held in Turkmenistan

A special operation under the name “Goknar-2013” (“Poppy”) aimed against the illegal spread of narcotic substances has been underway in Turkmenistan since the beginning of March, the Turkmen government said today.

A special operation under the name "Goknar-2013" ("Poppy") aimed against the illegal spread of narcotic substances has been underway in Turkmenistan since the beginning of March, the Turkmen government said today.

"We will continue to fight in a tough and uncompromised way against the spread of the narcotic substances presenting serious danger not only to the nation's gene pool, but also to the whole humanity", Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov said at the meeting of the State Security Council.

The head of state pointed out the importance of explanatory work among population, especially the youth, about the harmfulness of drugs for people's health and well-being.
Turkmenistan borders Afghanistan which is a source of systematic drugs deliveries to the global and European market according to UN data. Turkmenistan is a member of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs for the term of 2012 - 2015.

An operation aimed at the liquidation of more than 193 kilograms of narcotic substances seized by law-enforcement bodies of the country during several successful special operations took place near Ashgabat in late December 2012.
