The elections of members of the Turkmen Mejlis (the Turkmen Parliament) for its fifth convocation are scheduled for December 15, 2013, a Turkmen legislative body resolution said today.

The term of office of Turkmen MPs is five years. The current senior composition was elected in December 2008.

According to the Turkmen Constitution, the parliament passes laws, introduces changes and additions to the law, approves the state budget, decides on issuing referendums and calls presidential elections as well as oversees elections of members of parliament and representative bodies.

It also considers the appointment and dismissal of the President of the Supreme Court, the Attorney General and Minister of Interior and Minister of Justice via proposal of the head of state. It also ratifies and denounces international treaties, decides on changes of the state border and the administrative, territorial division of the country.
