The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) started a two-day seminar (November 25-26) on e-learning in higher education in Ashgabat, the U.S embassy in Turkmenistan reported today.

"The United States welcomes the opportunity to support Turkmenistan's national education reform initiatives," U.S. Ambassador to Turkmenistan Robert Patterson said, referring to them as "a necessary step in preparing students to meet the growing demands of a rapidly
expanding economy."

The seminar was organized in partnership with the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, USAID's Promotion of Information and Communication Technologies in Turkmenistan (PICTT) project, and the USAID Governance Strengthening Project (GSP).

Over the course of the symposium, attendees will discuss the ways in which technological progress is modernizing education, new teaching methods being developed as a result, and the opportunities information communication technology and internet-based learning resources are providing teachers and students.

The conference presenter, Mr. Harald Herrig, an international expert in electronic and blended learning, will lead the seminar for instructors and professors from the National Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, the National Institute of Education, the International University of Oil and Gas, and the Turkmen State Institute of Culture.

"Participants will also review international experiences on adopting blended and e-learning and consider possible ways to integrate learning management computer systems and software into Turkmenistan's education system,' the message said.
