Turkmenistan, UN discuss regional aspects of counter drugs operations

Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Jan. 17

By Huseyn Hasanov - Trend:

A delegation headed by the representative of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime Jeremy Milsom is on a visit to Ashgabat.

Milsom is coordinating a regional programme to support the efforts in counter drugs operations in Afghanistan, the Turkmen government said on Thursday.

The delegation held a meeting at the Turkmen Foreign Ministry, according to the report.

'During the talks, the sides discussed issues of implementing the regional programme to support the efforts in the counter drugs operations in Afghanistan and neighbouring countries in 2011-2015', a statement said.

Turkmenistan has a long border with Afghanistan whose territory according to the UN, is widely used for the cultivation of narcotic plants.

A large batch of drugs was seized at Turkmenistan's border in September 2013. This report was submitted at a meeting of the State Security Council.

Turkmenistan is actively cooperating with the UN in this area as a participant of three international conventions on combating illicit trafficking of narcotic and psychotropic substances adopted by the UN in 1961, 1971 and 1988.

Turkmenistan joined the Commission on Narcotic Drugs for 2012-2015. The country implements a number of regional and national projects and programmes for the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and the European Union, as well as projects involving the governments of Great Britain and the United States.
