Turkmen president says Aral Sea problem requires deliberated solutions

Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, May 6

By Huseyn Hasanov- Trend:

The environmental sphere, in particular, the problem related to shoaling of the Aral Sea is an important element of cooperation between Turkmenistan and Tajikistan, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said during his official visit to Dushanbe, Tajikistan from May 5 to May 6.

The president added that the Aral Sea problem requires deliberated solutions, a message from Turkmen government said on May 6.

'We believe that the approaches to solving the problem related to saving the Aral Sea, should be deliberated and based on the perception of our togetherness and unity in implementing this task," Berdimuhamedov said.

The same principle applies to the solving of the hydro-economic issues in the region, according to the government message.

Turkmenistan's position, declared in Dushanbe, is that this problem should be solved with active participation of international organizations, on the basis of universally recognized norms of international law and the interests of all states in the region.

Previously, from the rostrum of the UN General Assembly, Ashgabat called for the creation of a special international experts group, which in collaboration with the UN and its structures, could work out a comprehensive international legal document on saving the Aral Sea from shoaling.
