IMF positive on prospects of Turkmenistan's development

Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Nov.17

By Huseyn Hasanov- Trend:

Turkmenistan has seen high growth rates in its economy over the last 10 years, the mission of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in its report.

The IMF mission has recently held meetings with the representatives of Turkmenistan's parliament and private sector.

The participants focused on assessing the macroeconomic situation and prospects for Turkmenistan's economic development.

The IMF welcomed the fact that Turkmenistan took the advantage of the period of high oil and gas prices to double the income per capita by developing the hydrocarbon sector.

The IMF said that the tasks set by Turkmenistan's president on diversifying and developing the private sector for creating more promising and sough-after jobs for the youth are the priority.

Noting that three factors in 2014 led to deterioration of the foreign economic conditions for the Central Asian countries, the IMF mission welcomed the decisive response measures taken by Turkmenistan.

It was noted that the strategy of economic diversification, coupled with the devaluation in January 2015 gave a strong impetus to some sectors, especially, natural gas processing and agro-industrial production.

The report said that the IMF is ready to render assistance in holding reforms in Turkmenistan with recommendations on economic policy and capacity building programs, as well as in the sphere of macroeconomic statistics, monetary operations and fiscal policy.
