Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Dec. 21
By Huseyn Hasanov- Trend:
Turkmenistan and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) have signed an agreement on co-financing the country program for 2016-2020, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported Dec.21.
Director of UNFPA's Regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia Heimo Laakkonen said that by this agreement Turkmenistan reaffirms its commitment to further progress in the sphere of such priority population issues as gender equality, the realization of the potential of youth and universal access to services in the sphere of reproductive health.
Turkmenistan's cooperation with UNFPA began in 1992. Three country programs were implemented during this period.
This has contributed to strengthening the capacity of national institutions of Turkmenistan in spheres of improvement of reproductive health care, improving the system for collecting statistical information, creation of effective mechanisms for gender equality.
The fourth country program of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UNFPA for 2016-2020 reflects the goals of sustainable development. The work for the next five years is aimed at setting standards of quality on main national priorities: newborns' and mothers' health protection, reproductive health of young people, gender equality, population and others.
At the same time, Turkmenistan and UNFPA will be implementing this program on the principles of co-financing. This is due to the fact that in recent years Turkmenistan has experienced high rates of economic growth. Since 2012, Turkmenistan was classified by the World Bank as the country with above-average incomes, according to the newspaper.
