Turkmen president not happy with cotton harvesting pace

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has held a working meeting with the participation of heads of regions and the city of Ashgabat, the Turkmen government said in a message Oct. 3.

The Turkmen president focused the attention of administration of the country’s Ahal region on the low level of organization of work in the Tejen, Serakhs and Akbugday districts, as well as on the small number of cotton harvesters, low volumes of daily harvested cotton, including in the Kaakhkin and Altyn Asyr districts, having demanded to analyze the situation and establish the work at the appropriate level.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov drew attention of the administration of the Dashoguz region to low pace and serious shortcomings in the organization of cotton harvesting in Koneurgench and Akdepe districts.

The administration of the Lebap region was instructed to improve the efficiency of agricultural work, rational use of land and water for irrigation.

The Turkmen president drew attention to the ineffective use of equipment in the Sakar, Birata and Khodjambaz districts. It was also stressed that delay in cotton harvesting is observed in the Bayramaly, Mary and Karakum districts of the Mary region, and the equipment purchased by the state is ineffectively used.

It is planned to harvest 1.05 million tons of raw cotton in Turkmenistan in 2017.

Turkmenistan is one of the biggest cotton producers in the world. More than one million tons of cotton, which is the raw material base for the development of textile industry, are grown annually in the country. Up to 70 percent of the raw materials are processed in Turkmenistan.
