Russian research institute names necessary measures to mitigate pandemic impact on Turkmenistan

To overcome the negative consequences of the global crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, it is advisable for Turkmenistan to make additional efforts, head of the Central Asia sector at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of Russian Academy of Sciences (IMEMO RAS), Dina Malysheva told Trend.

In a number of necessary measures, she noted ensuring the stability of the trading system, which requires creating stocks of essential goods, primarily food products.

Also, to create conditions for ensuring food security by growing and producing their own agricultural products; to expand the sphere of industrial and agricultural production, which will help create new jobs (including in rural areas) and ensure food security; to improve the sphere of medical services.

She also noted the adoption of measures (the creation of special funds, government programs) to protect socially vulnerable segments of the population.

Meanwhile, she emphasizes that the government of Turkmenistan has already taken a number of measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection.

"Entry to the country was restricted from February-March, awareness-raising events were held (about the need to wash hands, observe other hygiene rules, etc.), a mask regime and social distancing are in effect, and quarantine restrictions were extended until October 15. According to the press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan published on July 7, 2020, a Government Commission has been established in Turkmenistan, which is responsible for resolving organizational, legal, financial, technical, and other issues related to countering coronavirus. An Operational Headquarters has also been created, which includes representatives of the ministries of Health and Medical Industry, Foreign Affairs, Internal Affairs, State Border, Customs, Migration Services, and other departments," she explained.
